A coiled snail shell. Gastropods appeared in the Cambrian, came through the end-Permian extinction in reduced numbers, and are today the largest class of molluscs and the only one to have fully colonised the land.

Fossil snails are usually preserved as internal moulds — sediment that filled the shell and hardened, with the shell itself later dissolved away — so the fine surface ornament that identification depends on is often lost.
