A tabulate coral that grew as thick, finger-like branches rather than a solid mass. Corallites open obliquely over the whole surface of each branch, so a weathered specimen is covered in small pores.
Broken branches are far more commonly found than whole colonies. Thamnopora is abundant worldwide in the Devonian and ranges back into the Silurian.
